Important information for parents about Meningococcal ACWY disease

In WA Meningococcal ACWY vaccine is currently provided free for all children aged 1-4 years and for adolescents 15-19 years. This is in response to ongoing meningococcal infections including the new emerging W strain, which is particularly serious.

In WA from January to October 2018, there have been 34 cases of meningococcal disease, 25 of these the W strain. Even though free meningococcal vaccination is available for all adolescents aged 15-19 years, coverage in the South West is only 60%. South West coverage for the 1-4 year age group is even lower at 50%.

We urge you to have your children vaccinated against this life-threatening disease. Vaccination is available from your GP and Community Health Centre. For further information please contact the SW Population Health Unit on 97812355.
